We love our festivals, we do! And here’s our latest: FANAH-FEST is Eight Degrees Brewing’s Beer and Music Festival for St Fanahan’s Day, celebrating the patron saint of Mitchelstown.
Warrior monk St Fahanan, who most people know best as a squat statue outside Mitchelstown garda station, came from Ulster to found a monastery near the town in the seventh century. Traditionally, St Fanahan’s Day was a pattern day, a local holiday. People gathered at his well, which is probably a ritual that goes back far further, to pre-Christian times as the well would have been a place for pagan worship.
So, bearing in mind that St Fanahan’s monastery would probably have brewed its own beer, we’ve decided that it’s a good day to celebrate beer in Mitchelstown.
Fanah-Fest is happening over the weekend 25-26 November. On Saturday 25 November, we’ll be officially launching our new #MauritiustoMitchelstown brewery, complete with beer tours and tastings from 2pm to 5pm. Then we’re off into Mitchelstown for a live music and beer trail, fun, games and merriment.
On Sunday 26 November, there will be a music and beer trail around Mitchelstown from 5pm onwards.
The event is free – if you’d like to register in advance, you can do so on EventBrite.ie or just turn up!
Are there ID or minimum age requirements to enter the event?
We will only be serving beer to over 18s.
What are my transport/parking options for getting to and from the event?
There will be parking at the brewery on Saturday afternoon. Cars have to be removed by 6pm as that is when the gates close and will remain closed until Monday morning. There is plenty of free parking in Mitchelstown, which is 15 minutes walk from the brewery. We’re planning on having a shuttle bus taking people from the brewery into town from 4.30pm.
Bus Eireann is the best way of getting to / from Mitchelstown on public transport. The route is the Expressway X8 and you can look at the timetable here.
Is there accommodation nearby?
If you’re looking for accommodation in the area, the nearest options are Ballinwillin House (find it on Booking.com) and the Firgrove Hotel. Its website is www.firgrovehotel.com.
